Colombia
With a hidden double waterfall and plenty of family-run coffee farms, Filandia represents laid-back Colombian life at its best.
While not as well known as nearby Salento, Filandia can’t be missed for travelers making their way through the Coffee Triangle. The colorful Andean town has fewer tourists than its popular neighbor yet has so much to offer. Stop at Helena Adentro if you get hungry. This hip Colombian restaurant serves up traditional dishes made with local ingredients - just remember that they don’t take reservations on weekends or during the high season. Leave your name and number and head out to explore Filandia (and work up an appetite). Soak in the view of the beautiful Cauca River Valley from the ‘mirador’ or viewing tower. Speaking of soaking, take an easy 35-minute hike out of town to find the famed secret double waterfall. The ‘doble cascada’ is located on private property but the local owners are happy to let visitors explore the grounds at their leisure.
