This magnificent mossy canyon skyrocketed to international fame after being featured in a Justin Beiber video and Game of Thrones.
The 2 kilometer-long Fjadrargljufur Canyon formed at the end of the last Ice Age when waters from a retreating glacier etched their way into the soft sedimentary rock. Today, a gentle stream lies at the bottom of the 100-meter-deep canyon, its rocky walls now covered in green moss. Despite its raw beauty, the canyon remained relatively unknown until it appeared in Justin Beiber’s “I’ll Show You” music video, and Jon Snow’s first dragon flight in Game of Thrones. After skyrocketing in popularity, the Environment Agency of Iceland stepped in to ensure this delicate environment isn’t damaged (Beiber fever has officially been blamed). Now visitors follow a trail leading along the side of the canyon where you’re treated to increasingly beautiful views, culminating in a viewing platform for a stunning vista over the whole area.
