Discover both colonial and indigenous history in Zululand’s largest museum village.
The Fort Nonquai Historical Museum is centered around the late 19th century fort that was built to defend the oldest trade route in Zululand. The building was staffed by 90 barefoot Zulu police ‘restrainers’ to maintain law and order. Today, the fort and its outbuildings form the largest museum village in Zululand. Here, you can learn about the area’s history from the Iron Age to the present day. Special attention is paid to the cultural exchanges of the past 200 years, like the white Zulu chief who had 48 wives and 117 children. There are also more specialized museums, such as the Vukani Museum, which houses one of the best basket collections in the country. And for culture you can really feel, you can head over to Adams’ Outpost, the oldest Victorian residence in Zululand, for a hearty meal. Afterwards, you can unwind in the delightful butterfly house.
