Algeria
Take in panoramic views of Oran from this historic hilltop fortress.
Built by the Spanish in the 16th century, the Fort of Santa Cruz is one of three bastions guarding Oran, Algeria’s second largest port. At an elevation of 400 meters, the Fort of Santa Cruz and its sister citadels proved invaluable - they successfully defended the city until 1831 when it finally fell to the French. Following a cholera epidemic in 1847, the French erected the small Chapel of Santa Cruz next to the fort. Today, the Fort of Santa Cruz’ main attraction remains its strategic position. From its hilltop perch, you’re treated to fantastic panoramic views of the port of Oran, while immersed in the fort’s historic atmosphere.
