Uganda
A collapsed colonial ruin with a checkered past sits amidst a gorgeous landscape that unfolds itself from the top of the hill where the last remaining walls stand.
Fort Patiko, also known as Baker’s fort is an 19th century fortification that has long since lost most of the structures that dotted the hill. The fort itself was built by Samuel Baker and served to combat the prominent slave trade in the area. Prior to the fort being built, the hill had been controlled by slavers who used it as a place to rest along their routes and store goods along with people slated to be sold. After Baker, the fort then housed the governors of colonial Uganda for a time. While the slave trade and colonial subjegation hold a dark pall over the area, the natural beauty still shines in the green flora and red rocks that surround the site. Despite most of the structures being only shades of their former selves, this piece of land is steeped in history. Visit Fort Patiko to see the dramatic contrast of a continents dark past and its bright landscape.
