Fort Roupel

During World War I, Fort Roupel was taken by the Germans without firing a single shot after Greek officials ordered it evacuated. This surrender led to a revolt of Greek officers, who established a provisional government in defiance of Athens. During World War II, however, the fort stood fast, resisting the Germans for 3 days, and was only abandoned after surrender of the Greek army in Thessaloniki. Today, visitors can step into one of the galleries, where the wards and side aisles are filled with dioramas depicting common scenes from the war. There’s also a museum exhibiting everything from photographs of the war to heavy machine guns.
