Walking through this picturesque town brings visitors past charming houses and Europe’s largest medieval castle.
Fougeres grew up around its castle, which was first mentioned in the 10th century. Originally a simple wooden fort, the town’s turbulent history required the castle be rebuilt and expanded several times. Today, its three rings of walls, dotted with thirteen towers, encircle two hectares. Visitors can walk the castle ramparts to enjoy the views and get a sense of their size before, ducking into the medieval town center to enjoy the charming half-timbered houses. The belfry, the first built in Brittany, used to mark the site of the medieval market. In the upper town, which was mostly burned down in the 18th century, visitors will find more robust stone buildings. Among them, the soaring, 12th century church of St Leonard with its picture-perfect belltower.
