Germany
Dive headlong into the legacy of the German Expressionist movement.
Founded in 1986 to pay homage to the life and work of one of the key figures in the German Expressionist movement, the Franz Marc Museum originally exhibited 150 works from the estate of Franz Marc, as well as items loaned from private collectors and museums, including documents on the life of the painter. The works of Kandinsky, Munter, Klee, and others from the circle of the ‘Blaue Reiter’ rounded out the exhibit. Art dealer and collector Otto Stangl envisioned supplementing the gallery with abstract paintings from the following decades that continued the ethos of ‘Blaue Reiter’ group. When the museum’s new building was completed in 2008, the collection of Etta and Otto Stangl was added to it, making Otto’s vision of a comprehensive compilation of abstract art a reality.
