Denmark
Scandinavia's largest Renaissance residence is an impressive display of wealth where you literally walk through Danish history.
Frederiksborg castle was built in the early 17th century as a royal residence for King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway. Spanning three islets, the castle took the title of the largest Renaissance residence in Scandinavia, and is richly decorated to show off King Christian IV’s status as a powerful European monarch. In 1882, brewer J. C. Jacobsen opened the castle to the public as the Danish Museum of National History, and today contains the largest collection of portrait paintings in Denmark. A tour of the castle’s opulently decorated rooms is not just an aesthetic treat, but an encounter with people and events that shaped Denmark’s history over the past 500 years.
