Sometimes referred to as the Mineral Capital of the World, this silver mining town saw its riches wash away.
Fresnillo has a rich history and was once a prosperous silver mining town. With such mineral wealth, the mines of the town were worked constantly beginning in the late 1600s. Mine shafts were dug over 50 meters into the earth which eventually led to flooding and sent the town into economic crisis. Around the time of collapse, the Iglesia de la Purificación was built. This church has seen historic times of despair and violence and a number of bullet holes in the tower can still be seen today! Silver is still mined in the town but agriculture has also become a major player for Fresnillo’s residents. Each year, the town sees religious pilgrimages and welcomes tourists during all seasons.
