Frutillar

Enjoy charming German architecture, stunning lakeside views, and maybe a concert at this UNESCO City of Music.

About

In the 19th century, German immigrants settled down on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, establishing the small town of Frutillar. True to their heritage, these immigrants built their homes in the traditional German style, except instead of being surrounded by alps, the half-timbered buildings are watched over by Patagonia’s soaring volcanoes. Strolling the tidy streets feels like you’re in a museum of German architecture - as embodied by the German Colonial Museum. Explore the garden, machine warehouse, water mill, and furnished main house, and take in the amazing view of the lake and mountains. The other main landmark is the colorful Theater of the Lake, a striking venue jutting out into the water. Aside from the charming architecture, what Frutillar is best known for is its many concerts, culminating in the 10-day-long Semanas Musicales in January and February. These shows are such an integral part of the town’s identity that it was even named a UNESCO City of Music!
