Germany
Regarded as the birthplace of Central European Catholic Christianity, the city of Fulda is home to Fulda Cathedral, the oldest pilgrimage site in Germany.
The medieval city of Fulda with its cobbled streets, winding streets, small squares and lovingly restored half-timbered houses is the ideal place for a relaxing stroll. However, if you’re looking for a true feel of the city and to experience the influence of religion on the region, then pay a visit to Fulda Cathedral, the burial site of St. Boniface and regarded as the jewel of the city. The current structure was built in the 1700s and is regarded as a baroque architectural masterpiece, similar to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Although smaller in size and lesser in grandeur, the cathedral’s interior is actually reminiscent of St. Peter’s. The body of St. Boniface, along with that of King Conrad I of Germany — whose successors would later become Holy Roman Emperors — is interred in the crypt. For those interested in religion or architecture then a visit to this iconic cathedral will not disappoint.
