This charming house is the oldest building in the are and the last remnant of a whaling station that helped supply Europe with oil.
Fyffe House was built in 1844 as part of a whaling station that had been established by Robert Fyfe in 1842. While his four whaleboats, Fyfe hunted the southern right whale for oil that would go on to illuminate Europe. As the oldest building in the region, the quaint pink cottage offers an intimate look at the demanding lives of Kaikoura’s early settlers through a collection of historic artefacts as well as informative dioramas and audio stories. This is tied in with whaling history, which laid the foundations for the settlement (literally - the house is built on whale bones).
