Ireland
The 2020 European Capital of Culture is a vibrant city that hasn’t forgotten its history.
The city of Galway grew around a 12th century fortification built by the King of Connacht. During the Middle Ages, it was Ireland’s principal port for trade with Spain and France, and was even visited by Christopher Columbus in 1477. In the 17th century, the city’s fortunes turned, and a string of misplaced alliances saw it besieged and captured on several occasions, which, coupled with the potato famine, left it debilitated until the late 20th century. Today, the city is littered with reminders of its rich history, like the 15th century Spanish Arch - a section of the medieval walls that protected moored Spanish ships. Another section of the medieval walls has been incorporated into the Eyre Square Centre shopping mall, while Ireland’s finest town castle is now an AIB bank. The city itself is abuzz with buskers and street performers, which makes for some great entertainment as you seek out some of Galway’s famed fresh seafood.
