Ireland
This rugged countryside dotted with lakes has been attracting nature lovers since the 18th century.
During the last Ice Age, a huge glacier tore across Ireland, leaving the Gap of Dunloe in its wake. This narrow mountain pass runs for about 11 kilometers between the MacGillycuddy's Reeks and Purple Mountain Group. In the late 18th century, Romantic writers waxed poetic about the Gap’s sublime and savage scenery, cementing it as a destination for nature lovers. The winding round works its way along the River Loe, past mountain lakes, past pastoral fields, and craggy peaks. A quaint stone bridge between the first two lakes is known as The Wishing Bridge, for, it’s said, whoever makes a wish while standing upon it is destined to have their dream come true.
