Europe’s largest disc gas tank is now a unique exhibition space.
Built in 1929 to support the surround steel works, the Gasometer Oberhausen was decommissioned in 1988. Renovations in the 90s transformed the tank into a unique exhibition hall, with part of its support structure now serving as a grandstand. While it’s possible to climb the 592 steps to the top of the tower, the glass elevator is a more enjoyable option. On a clear day, this lookout provides panoramic views of the entire Ruhr area. Every year, the Gasometer hosts a new exhibition, usually focused on nature or culture, such as 2018’s "The Call of the Mountains", which documents the alpine ecosystem, and man’s relationship with it.
