With a historic, all-in-one mill and flooded forest, this pleasant park is a perfect place to enjoy South Georgia’s natural beauty.
The 1,634-acre George L. Smith State Park is centered around the historic 19th century Parrish Mill and Pond, a combination gristmill, saw mill, covered bridge and dam built. From here, seven miles of hiking trails lead from the water’s edge into the forest where you can spot gopher tortoises. Or you can rent a kayak to paddle through thick stands of cypress and tupelo trees draped with Spanish moss. While exploring this water-filled forest, be on the lookout for beaver dams, blue heron, white ibis and other wading birds.
