More than just commemorating the Holocaust, this moving museum remembers the hope and bravery of the resistance and survivors.
The Ghetto Fighters Museum (Lohamei HaGetaot Museum) was founded by members of Kibbutz Lohamei Hagetaot, a community of Holocaust survivors, in 1949. The world's first museum commemorating the Holocaust and Jewish heroism, and the first of its kind to be founded by Holocaust survivors, the museum tells the tragic tale of the Holocaust, but with an emphasis on the bravery of the rebels and survivors. Everything from pre-war letters to photographs of life in Warsaw, to children’s diary entries, to the actual glass booth in which Adolf Eichmann was tried for crimes against humanity are used to present different perspectives of the Holocaust. Oftentimes, the artefacts are accompanied with the story of how they came to be in the museum, which adds an even more personal element to their moving stories. While the horrors of the Holocaust are chilling, message behind the Lohamei HaGetaot Museum is one of hope.
