Portugal
The oldest and only remaining tea plantation in all of Europe stretches its lush green terraces across the coast of São Miguel.
From as far back as 1883, the Gorreana Tea Plantation has been producing 100% organic green and black teas, and tea infusions. It covers an area of 32 hectares and is home to over 3 million tea plants, cultivated using traditional methods of hand picking and processing leaves on-site. Take a tour of the plantation and wade through the waist-high leaves while learning about the history and production process of the tea. Visit the factory and museum where original machinery from 1840 can be observed, then finish your tour with a complimentary cup of tea. Choose from the on-site tea room or covered veranda outside, with sweeping views over the island’s north shore. The Gorreana Tea Plantation is open Monday to Friday from 8AM to 6PM and Saturdays and Sundays from 9AM to 6PM.
