50 years of excavations have revealed a robust Roman metropolis that shows the Roman empire was supported by more than just columns.
In 1958, the remains of a large building were found in a former vineyard. Excavations revealed that what at first appeared to be an early Christian basilica was in fact a palatial villa in the remains of an ancient Roman settlement. Continuous excavations since the 50s have unearthed more of this 3rd century city. Within the town walls and gates, streets bordered with colonnades, a forum, temples, shops, private estates, and even the city’s graveyard have all been uncovered and are open to the public in this open-air museum. The town’s artefacts, such as bronze statues, and pottery ar on display in the museum building, and give a more detailed look at this lost leg of the fallen empire.
