Nicaragua
One of the oldest European settlements in the Americas, this historic city is the most picturesque in the country.
Originally a thriving indigenous settlement, in 1524 Francisco Hernández de Córdoba renamed the city Granada, establishing the first European city in mainland America. Despite being attacked by pirates multiple times, Granada continued to thrive as trade center, and today is the third oldest European settlement in the Americas. Among travellers, Granada is revered for its colonial architecture, exhibiting both Baroque and Moorish influences, and making the city feel like a tropical Spain. The Calle la Calzada is a pedestrian street lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops, where you can immerse yourself in local life. From here, it’s a short walk to see Granada’s impressive churches: the Cathedral Iglesia Guadalupe, Iglesia la Merced, and the yellow Catedral de Granada.
