Grave of Cecil John Rhodes

A stunning vista, a controversial personality, and an elegant but simple burial site.

About

Without a doubt Cecil Rhodes is one of the most influential and controversial men in the history of southern Africa. An astute businessman, a great empire builder, and instrumental to the construction of the Cape to Cairo Railway, he was also a white supremacist and possibly the architect of apartheid. Upon his death he requested that he be buried in his favourite spot, in the Matobo Hills which he described as the “View of the World”. Many black Zimbabwians have described the continued presence of his grave as an insult to the ancestors of Africa, but there are many others that support it’s existence as a reminder, or warning, to future Africans about the yoke of colonialism. His remains, buried in the granite hill under a simple slab of stone, attracts thousands of visitors a year and brings much needed money to the Matobo National Park.
