Montenegro
The richly carved stones and inter-confessional acceptance earned this burial site a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
A distinctive cultural feature in the Balkans, Stećci are stone monuments used in the middle ages to mark Christian burial sites. While the monuments are exceptional examples of the region’s spiritual, artistic and historical traditions, the burial sites themselves are notable for their inter-confessionality - being used by all three medieval Christian communities (the Orthodox Church, the Catholic Church and the Church of Bosnia, which lasted for about three centuries until the second half of the 15th century) simultaneously. Even today, many of the site’s 49 stones display an impressive diversity of forms and motifs through rich reliefs. Visitors are free to roam through this UNESCO World Heritage site to appreciate the medieval art at their leisure.
