Jamaica
Tour one of Jamaica’s best-preserved great houses for a glimpse into the lives of one of the island’s most important families.
Richard Barrett, a cousin of the famous poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, built the grand Greenwood Great House in the 1780s. The Barretts were one of the wealthiest and most influential families in Jamaica. Because of Richard’s kind treatment of his slaves, Greenwood was spared during the Christmas Rebellion, and he went on to represent the Jamaican legislature before parliament on the issues of emancipation. Today, Greenwood is considered one of the best preserved great houses in Jamaica, retaining most of its original furniture, as well as the largest and rarest collection of musical instruments and books on the island. On a guided tour, you’ll not only see these historic furnishings, but learn about the history of the house, and slavery in Jamaica in general from a passionate guide. Please note: $20 entry fee is not included in the stop price. For more information, please visit https://www.greenwoodgreathouse.com/
