Enjoy the beach and mountains in this fortified medieval old town.
This Adriatic town can trace its roots to the Neolithic era, with a 7th-5th century BC necropolis having been discovered in the area. Early records of the town are scarce, but the town was likely fairly successful in the Middle Ages, as it was regularly attacked by pirates, and involved in a feud with the neighbouring territory. Finally, after one-too-many pirate attacks, the town erected the fortified walls that can still be seen today. Inside, little has changed over the centuries, and visitors will find Romanesque churches, medieval homes, and a picturesque plaza ensconced on the hilltop. The 16th century Church of Saint Lucia stands on the birthplace of Pope Sixtus V. After soaking in the medieval atmosphere, the finishing touch for a trip to Grottammare would be to enjoy the view of the coast while supping on some traditional food at one of the terrace restaurants.
