Grutas de Cacahuamilpa

One of the largest cave systems in the world, this National Park gives visitors a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the extensive network of grottos.

About

Grutas de Cacahuamilpa National Park was established as a National Park in 1936 and contains 90 large salons within its extensive cavern network. The massive, illuminated caves hold fascinating formations carved by nature from limestone; formations which give name to each of the rooms. There’s a ‘goat’ salon, a ‘throne’ salon and a ‘sleeping woman’ salon to name just a few, each so-called for the interpretation of their unique concretions. The cave system is still live, meaning that water from the ground still filters into it through the two underground rivers constantly evolving the formations through erosion of the limestone. Tours of the cavern system run every hour and last for approximately two hours. If you prefer to remain above ground, the park has a botanical garden where you can learn about the native flora, rock-climbing options for adventurous visitors, or a tranquil natural swimming pool if you prefer to relax.
