Guasave, the seat of the municipality of the same name, has a history tracing back to the pre-Hispanic era. A large pantheon was discovered, along with high quality ceramics and artifacts, suggesting Guasave as the northernmost border of Mesoamerica. The ruins of the San Ignacio temple offer a glimpse into the region’s past, along with Pueblo Nuevo de Nio, which preserves the ruins of an unfinished Jesuit mission. Nature enthusiasts will be in heaven at Navachiste bay, an expansive estuary with coves, lagoons, and numerous islands. The waters reap abundant fish species for sport fishing and is also known for its archaeological remains, including petroglyphs, in its surrounding hills and lush vegetation. Visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary, a modern church located in the heart of Guasave that is held in high esteem by the local community, and make sure to try some of the city’s delicious fish and shellfish. Dishes such as Zarandeado, aguachiles, ceviche and tamales are deeply ingrained in the local culture.
