Tunisia
This Berber settlement has been famed for its exceptional pottery since the days of ancient Rome.
Guellala dates back to antiquity, when it prospered producing large clay jars for the storage and export of olive oil back to Rome. Two thousand years later, this Berber town is still famous throughout Tunisia for its pottery - its name literally meaning “Potters”. The sidewalks of the town are lined with vendors presenting their wares, with plenty of studios where you can see “the gods of clay” at work. To the south of town you’ll find the bright, white, 15th century mosque. An excellent example of Djerban Islamic architecture, it’s a beautiful place to watch the sunset. Standing atop Djerba Island’s tallest hill, the beautifully white-washed, but somewhat kitschy Musée de Guellala presents elements of Djerban life ranging from circumcision to unusual Sufi ceremonies through life-size dioramas.
