Relive Roman histrionics at this restored theatre.
Built at the turn of the 3rd century AD by Emperor Septimius Severus, the Guelma Roman Theatre brought entertainment to the masses - seating up to 4500. While the theatre certainly put on plays, historians believe the raised wooden platform supported another type of performance: animal fights. Like most of Guelma’s other Roman monuments, the theatre was in ruins by the modern age, but extensive restoration efforts in the early 20th and 21st centuries have restored it to its former glory. Now you can sit in the stands as the Romans did, imagining tragedies and bloodsport and the thrill of the crowd. Be sure to walk around to see statues and other artefacts, and pay a visit to the small museum where there are mosaics and more statues. Please note: the entry fee is not included in the stop price.
