Uganda
Once a city of turmoil, a decade of peace has seen this place truly thrive
Gulu was once the focal point for the destabilizing Lord's Resistance Army in 1990’s, but since their defeat in the late 2000’s the city has rebounded strongly. You might consider just passing through Gulu but it would be a shame to miss out on this bustling and friendly city. It’s a pleasant stop with plenty of relaxed spots to hang out at, and with the amount of NGOs in the area the locals are used to welcoming visitors. Check out the various craft markets for paintings, wood carvings, and fabrics made by talented local artisans. It’s also worth visiting the Taks Cultural Centre and peruse an art exhibition or a cultural performance. There’s a restaurant there serving local cuisine. All proceeds go towards youth training. As for landmarks, the best maintained (possibly oldest) is the impressive red brick St. Joseph’s Cathedral, which was once visited by Pope John Paul II.
