Estonia
Bordered by the sea on three sides, this small resort town on the west coast of Estonia is known for its restorative mud spas and medieval attractions.
Haapsalu is situated on the shores of Haapsalu Bay, surrounded by picturesque forests and meadows, and radiates a ghostly aura of age-old legends and apparitions. The town dates back to 1279 and many of its original buildings still stand, including the episcopal castle in which the storied “Lady in White” haunts the once male-dominated fortress after being impaled on the castle walls. While touring the spectral town, stop by one of the three famous salt mud spas, frequented by the royal Russian Romanov family when they first learned of it in 1825. Pick up a famous Haapsalu shawl with delicate craftsmanship made by local women, popularized in the 19th century. The town also has a rich cultural scene, with numerous festivals and events throughout the year. One of the most popular events is the White Lady Festival in summer, celebrating the famous legend, and the August Blues Festival held every August.
