Habsburg Castle

The remains of this medieval castle mark the origins one of the most influential dynasties in Europe.

About

Count Radbot built Habsburg Castle in the early 11th century, likely naming the castle after a hawk (Habicht in German) seen sitting on its walls. His grandson Otto II took the castle name as his own, adding "von Habsburg" to his title, and starting the legendary Habsburg family. Though the Habsburgs lost control of the castle in the 15th century, the surviving elements of the castle still bear their name. Two towers from the original 11th century structure are still standing, joined by a 13th century residence. Inside, visitors will find a small exhibition about the castle’s history, and a cafe where you can grab a sweet treat.
