A unique coastal temple in Busan stands at the precipice of the sea, offering a rare seaside spiritual experience.
Haedong Yonggungsa was built from a dream. A royal consultant of the Goryeo Dynasty dreamt that a sea god promised prosperity in exchange for its construction, and so it was to be. It is particularly exceptional, as most Korean temples are nestled in the mountains. The temple's entrance is lined with vendors selling street foods and Buddhist artifacts. Statues of the Korean Zodiac and prominent Buddhist figures decorate the pathway leading to the Traffic Safety Prayer Pagoda and the main gate. The temple boasts an array of stone lanterns, and visitors can interact with Buddha statues that promise various blessings through belly rubs and donations. Descending 108 stairs, one reaches a breathtaking view of the ocean and temple grounds. Climbing a staircase past a dragon sculpture leads to the healing Buddha statue and a stunning sea vista. The temple complex includes the Daeungjeon Main Sanctuary, Yongwangdang Shrine, Gulbeop Buddhist Sanctum within a cave, and a three-story pagoda with symbolic lions representing emotion. The temple itself is open every day from 5AM to 8PM.
