Hal Saflieni Hypogeum and the Tarxien temples

These two stunning temple complexes and underground structures date back to the Saflieni phase of Maltese prehistory and hold countless artifacts that provide a glimpse into the fascinating era.

About

The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum and Tarxien Temples are must-see remains of a bygone era, allowing you to step back in time on well-preserved archaeological sites. Situated in Paola, the Hypogeum is an ancient sanctuary and necropolis that holds the remains of over 7,000 individuals, regarded as one of the best-preserved examples of Maltese temple building culture. Explore the concave facade and five chambers, and the prehistoric art in the South structure full of sculptures depicting spirals, goats, bulls, pigs and a ram. Just 400 meters away are the Tarxien Temples, dating back to approximately 3150 BC. These four megalithic structures are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and exhibit exquisite examples of prehistoric art, including reliefs of animals such as bulls and a sow, as well as a large, skirted statue. The purpose of the Temples was likely related to animal sacrifice, indicated by the presence of altars, animal bones and tools like flint knives. The site offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the rituals and beliefs of Malta’s ancient inhabitants and is open daily from 9AM to 4:30PM with an entry fee of €35.
