Switzerland
Well-preserved and completely surrounded by water, this is one of the finest moated castles in all of Switzerland.
Built in the 11th century by the von Hallwyl family, over the next 800 years, this lower nobility clan would distinguish themselves on the battlefields of the Swiss confederacy, in science, politics, and business. In the 15th century, the castle was burnt by Bernese troops, but immediately rebuilt bigger and better than before. Today visitors can relax in the castle’s beautiful courtyard while enjoying a snack from the bistro all year round, or take a tour of the castle is available to bring visitors through eleven different exhibits on life in the Middle Ages. The castle also hosts special events, such as the Hallwyl Castle Opera, which only occurs every three years. Please note: the castle is closed for the Winter.
