Rwanda
The rare and mesmerizing skill of spinning wool into yarn is kept alive at this beautiful repository of handcrafted goods - all made for a cause.
Take a tour of Umuzabibu Mwiza, home to the empowering social enterprise called Handspun Hope. Founded in 2013, over 200 at-risk women in northern Rwanda, many of whom were survivors of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, are employed for above fair wages to produce organic, handcrafted artisanal goods. Organic yarn and fiber products from flocks of Merino sheep and German Angora rabbits raised on the farm are used sustainably to create everything from hand-knit sweaters to felted sculptures. Watch and discover as women dye the yarn naturally with native plant materials such as cosmos petals, onionskins and eucalyptus leaves. The technique is drawn from regional weaving traditions, making for one-of-a-kind pieces. Book a tour between 9:00am and 4:30pm from US$15 and get the opportunity to purchase Handspun Hope yarn and hand-knit products at the end.
