Covering a variety of habitats, over half of the plants in this expansive natural landscape burst into bloom in Spring and Fall.
Hantam National Botanical Garden was established in 2007 as the first national botanical garden in the Northern Cape. Covering 6,000 hectares over several plots of land, the Hantam National Botanical Garden offers a network of walking trails lead through a series of different terrain and soil types, each with their own distinctive biome. The garden earned the nickname ‘the bulb capital of the world’ because nearly 60% of the flora are bulbs. In Spring and Autumn visitors are treated to spectacular displays of color as countless wildflowers bloom. The garden plays an important role in preserving the cape’s threatened endemic habitats, which are some of the most diverse in the world when it comes to flora. The best place to see all three vegetation types is in the southernmost part of the garden where visitors can explore the park on their own, or book a guided tour in advance, which is highly recommended.
