Highclere Castle

This stupendous castle, mixing Gothic and Classical styles, was used as the setting for the hit show Downton Abbey.

About

Highclere Castle’s origins date back to the 8th century, and the estate was recorded in the Domesday Book. Over the years, the estate was rebuilt several times, with the current structure coming from a major overhaul in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The castle’s illustrious owners played some surprisingly prominent roles in world history, with the 4th Earl of Carnarvon helping found modern-day Canada, and the 5th Earl helped uncover the tomb of King Tut. In recognition of the Earl’s passion for Egyptology, the castle cellars have been converted into a fascinating exhibition detailing the discovery of King Tut’s tomb. Of course, for many, the main draw was the castle’s role in Downton Abbey, and a walk through the castle’s beautiful grounds lets visitors follow in the footsteps of Lord Grantham, admiring the castle’s striking facade, and bringing walkers past several stupendous follies.
