Explore the delicate Florida wilderness in one of its most diverse and precious parks.
Opened to the public in 1931, Highlands Hammock State Park is one of the oldest in the state. Over the years, it's expanded to more than 9,000 acres and now encompasses 15 distinct natural communities, several of which are imperiled or threatened. Wander among the park's famous thousand-year-old oaks, where black bears and endangered Florida panthers prowl. Or follow an elevated boardwalk through the cypress swamp where you can see alligators, waterfowl, other wildlife. But with 9 hiking trails, you'll have plenty of opportunity to immerse yourself in nature and see local flora and fauna. If you have an interest in ecology, you can even take a guided tour with a park ranger. The tram tour is another great option as it delves into parts of the park that are off limits to hikers, and offers the chance to see birds, alligators, turtles, deer and other wild residents up close.
