Hnevank Monastery

Atop a hill within a picturesque gorge, this historic monastery has served important religious, educational and organizational purposes over the centuries.

About

Hnevank Monastery is nestled near the village of Kurtan in the scenic Lori Province of Armenia and dazzles with picturesque views where the Dzoraget and Gargar rivers converge. Three churches, a parish, and ancillary buildings comprise the complex which is believed to have been built at different times. Remnants of a sizable two-story building with numerous doors and windows, possibly the convent residents, can also be found about 50 meters east of the complex. The exact date of the church’s construction remains uncertain, with some suggesting a 12th century origin, while the architectural style of the church indicates construction in the 7th century. The monastery is shrouded in mystery, with the exact circumstances surrounding its decay and abandonment remaining unknown. However, recent efforts made to restore and preserve the half-ruined complex have breathed new life into the monastery, and today it stands as a testament to Armenia’s rich cultural and religious heritage.
