Hoba Meteorite

The world’s largest known meteorite gives visitors a chance to touch a fallen star.

About

The Hoba Meteorite was discovered in 1920 by farm-owner Jacobus Hermanus Brits when he struck it with his plow. Weighing in at 66 tons, and measuring about about 3 meters long, 3 meters wide, and 3 meters tall, the Hoba meteorite is the largest ever discovered, though inexplicably didn’t leave a crater. This suggests it might have skipped across the planet from its original impact site - an impressive show of force considering the American Museum of Natural History was unable to move. Now a national monument, the 200-400 million year old meteorite provides a unique opportunity to lay hands on something of alien origin.
