Holloko

Holloko is a thirteenth-century village in Hungary unaffected by time and along with the castle ruins and the nearby surroundings, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

About

Consisting of just two streets, the medieval village of Holloko is a shrine to traditional village life where residents dressed in traditional costume still greet visitors from the comfort of their shaded porches. The village has retained its own unique traditional style over the centuries, shunning Renaissance and Baroque architecture in favor of its own rock foundations and earthen walls. Now open to tourism, there are handicraft shops, gift shops, and in-house museums for visitors to browse around. The village is overlooked by the castle ruins, which have been partially restored and along with a restaurant, include wooden and stone staircases that lead to the top and offer wonderful panoramic views of the village and the surroundings. A stop by in Holloko provides the opportunity to experience an outstanding example of a deliberately preserved traditional settlement and a culture that has made a habit of shunning change.
