Puerto Rico
The stony visage of a heroic native chieftain guards the entrance to Porta del Sol.
The Homage to the Natives, also known as the Monumento al Cacique Mabodamaca, depicts the face of Taino chief Mabodamaca, who tried to protect his people from the Spanish. Located right off the highway (take care crossing the road), it makes for a quick dose of native history as you make your way to the pristine beaches of western Puerto Rico. As an added bonus, there’s often a food cart tucked away in a nearby cave where you can grab some fresh empanadas for the road.
