Croatia
High above Dubrovnik, Fort Imperial offers the best views of the city, and a look at the city’s struggles during the war for independence.
If you take the cable car up Mt. Srd from Dubrovnik just for the view, then you’ll miss the real treat at the top. Fort Imperial, built during the Napoleonic Wars in the early 1800s, was where the Croats resisted the Serbian military during the Siege of Dubrovnik - one of the fiercest battles of the Independence War. Isolated, out-manned, and outgunned, Croatian forces weathered months of heavy bombardment in order to protect Dubrovnik and its residents. Today, the fort still wears its battle scars and has around 500 exhibits on display, mainly focused on Dubrovnik in the Croatian War of Independence, and the history of Fort Imperial. Documents, photographs, weapons, maps, and video recordings commemorate the city’s struggles. Outside, stands a memorial plaque with the names of those who died defending Dubrovnik.
