Spain
Thanks to a recent gastronomical boom, this beautiful village has transformed into a must-visit for anyone with a mouth travelling though the Basque country.
While a small fishing village today, this sea-front town was an important stronghold from the Middle Ages through the French Revolution. Though town was captured by the French, the Treaty of Basel was signed before they could destroy the walls and castle that still stand in the historic quarter today. While admiring the town's historic architecture and colorful facades, visitors should keep an eye out for one more thing: Basque restaurants. In recent years, the village has attracted some of the best Basque chefs, making it perhaps the single best place to sample their signature cuisine. Hondarribia is overflowing with great restaurants, some of which have received a Michelin star, but almost any are going to be a pleasure for your palette.
