Nestled on the slopes of Mt. Cheongseongsan, this temple derives its name from the magnificent waterfall that stands at the heart of the complex.
Hongryongsa Temple, also known as the “Rainbow Dragon Temple,” is a stunning testament to the ancient teachings of Buddhism, set amidst a jaw-dropping setting. The Hongryong-pokpo Waterfall near the temple cascades down a height of fourteen meters, and legend has it that a dragon once resided within the falls, soaring into the sky on a rainbow before vanishing. Approaching the temple, you’ll be greeted by the Iljumun Gate and an observation pavilion offering a panoramic view of the flowing waters from Hongryong-pokpo. The main focal point is the Daeung-jeon Hall, adorned with intricate floral designs, Dragon Ship of Wisdom murals, and images of dragons. Within the hall, a triad of statues centered around Seokgamoni-bul (The Historical Buddha) is complemented by murals. As visitors ascend to the top of the stairs, the breathtaking Hongryong-pokpo Waterfall comes into view, flanked by statues of Yaksayeorae-bul and Gwaneum-bosal. A visit to Hongryongsa Temple is especially recommended during spring and summer when the waterfall is at its most splendid.
