The largest of Galicia's horreos might just be a monument to a historic rivalry.
Horreos (granaries) are ubiquitous in Galicia, and the Horreo de Carnota is the largest of them all. Built in 1768, the 34.76 meter long structure stands atop 22 pairs of feet. With similar construction, style, and even engravings as the horreo in Lira, it’s believed the Horreo de Carnota was built as part of a rivalry between the two towns. Nearby, you’ll also find a cylindrical dovecot, which is again similar in style to the one in Lira.
