Hortobagy Nine-hole Bridge, Craftsmen’s Yard, and Fishponds

The UNESCO-listed Hortobágy region has a distinctive culture, Hungary’s best-known bridge, and an internationally recognized wetland.

About

The Hortobágy area earned a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list because of its distinctive landscape, and 2000 years of pastoral culture. Today, visitors can stop by the visitor center to learn the full history of the region, and learn about its culture first-hand in the Craftsmen’s Yard. Visitors can learn about the region’s ethnographic and cultural values through handicrafts, or a meal at the local restaurant, which has been open since 1781! Nearby, is the legendary nine-hole bridge - the country longest, and most photographed stone bridge. To fully immerse yourself in the Hortobágy’s unique landscape, head to the Great Fishponds. This expansive wetland was made in the 19th century after the area’s natural water-sources all dried up. Today, the ecosystem created by the ponds is recognized by several international bodies for importance as a habitat for wetland flora and fauna, which visitors can discover for themselves on a scenic nature trail.
