Hutt Lagoon

Shifting shades of pink water cover this salt lake, creating a surreal sight only a short distance from the sea shore.

About

Near the pleasant fishing town of Port Gregory lies the Hutt Lagoon, a grand salt lake renowned for its impressive shades of pink and red which change hue depending on the amount of sunlight throughout the day. The unique color of the lake is caused by the blooming algae, which is filled with carotene. The lake is abundant in resources like gypsum, brine shrimp and of course salt; but truly it is its color that draws people in. Take in the views from right by the shore and then take one of the buggy tours that take you up the sand dunes to get an elevated view that highlights the contrast between the pink lake and the blue sea. The nearby town also offers a typical small town Australia experience, where you can grab some refreshments to escape from the sun. If you travel between July and September you will also be treated to the blooming wildflowers that cover the countryside.
