Hverir

Not far from Lake Mývatn, Hverir presents a totally different geothermal landscape to the relaxing thermal baths and mossy lava fields. Here, hydrogen sulfide rises from the earth from steaming fumaroles, and bubbling mud pits. The landscape appears burnt and burning, with an abundance of rusty reds, smoldering oranges and bold yellows. Surrounding it all is the scent of burning brimstone, adding to the otherworldly atmosphere. After exploring Hverir’s geothermal features, many visitors like to make the hike up Namafjall mountain for a bird’s eye view of this unique landscape.
